Titus: Introduction

Titus is one of the three Pastoral Epistles. Paul had left his trusted coworker Titus on the island of Crete "to straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town" (Titus 1:5). It was hard soil: Cretan culture was notorious — even one of their own prophets said "Cretans are always liars" — and inside the church, rebellious talkers and deceivers were disrupting whole households. This letter is Paul's field manual for planting healthy, credible churches in a corrupt environment.

Though brief, the letter moves with clear logic. Chapter one calls for qualified leaders: elders must be blameless, holding firmly to the trustworthy message so they can both encourage by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. Chapter two calls for sound teaching: older men and women, young people, and servants are each to live in ways that make "the teaching about God our Savior attractive." Chapter three calls for good works: be subject to rulers, show true humility toward everyone, and devote yourselves to doing what is good.

The brightest moments of the book are two gospel declarations set like jewels among the ethical instructions: the grace of God has appeared, teaching us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions (Titus 2:11-12); and he saved us not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy, through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5). Grace comes before works, and grace inevitably produces works — that is Titus's enduring message to the church in every age.
