1 John: Introduction
First John reads like a pastoral letter to a whole family of faith — no named recipients, yet warmed throughout by the tender address "dear children." The aging apostle had seen with his eyes and touched with his hands the Word of life, and his purpose in writing is stated with unusual clarity: "so that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13). False teachers had left the church, denying that Jesus Christ had come in the flesh and unsettling the believers' assurance; John writes to call God's children back to what they heard from the beginning.
The letter circles around three intertwined tests. The test of light: God is light, and only those who walk in the light and keep His commands truly know Him. The test of love: everyone who loves their brothers and sisters has been born of God, while whoever does not love remains in darkness. The test of faith: everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. Rather than a linear argument, John writes in a spiral, returning to each theme at greater depth — inviting honest self-examination and, at the same time, settled confidence.
The letter's most radiant declaration is that God is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. We love because He first loved us. And for those who stumble, John leaves wide and generous comfort: if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us; and if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father — Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. Assurance rests not on our perfection but on His faithfulness.
