2 John: Introduction
Second John, only thirteen verses long, is one of the shortest books in the New Testament. It is addressed to "the lady chosen by God and to her children" — a phrase many interpreters take as an affectionate way of speaking to a local congregation and its members. The writer, who calls himself simply "the elder," has heard that some of the recipients are walking in the truth, and his joy spills over into this brief but weighty note. Its melody can be stated in one line: truth and love must walk together.
The first half of the letter is encouragement: love one another — and love means walking in obedience to His commands, not a new command but the one heard from the beginning. The second half is warning: many deceivers have gone out into the world, refusing to acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. Believers must watch out that they do not lose what they have worked for; those who carry this false teaching are not even to be welcomed into the house, lest hospitality become participation in their wicked work.
For readers today, this little letter carries a timely word. In an age when tolerance is the highest slogan, love severed from truth degenerates into indulgence of error; yet truth without love turns cold and wounding. John binds the two tightly together — greeting his readers "in truth and love" and hoping to visit face to face, "so that our joy may be complete." Truth is the ground on which love stands; love is the warmth truth was always meant to have.
