3 John: Introduction

Third John is a personal note addressed to "my dear friend Gaius." The writer, "the elder," confesses that he has no greater joy than to hear that his children are walking in the truth. Within its fourteen verses three figures step forward: Gaius, who faithfully opens his home to traveling preachers; Diotrephes, who loves to be first and refuses to welcome the brothers; and Demetrius, well spoken of by everyone — and by the truth itself. Three portraits, setting out two very different ways to live.

The letter's center is hospitality. The traveling teachers had gone out for the sake of the Name, accepting no help from unbelievers; when believers receive them and send them on their way in a manner worthy of God, they become co-workers with the truth. Gaius's love has been testified to before the whole church. Diotrephes stands as his foil — gossiping maliciously about the apostle, refusing hospitality, and expelling those who offer it — a standing warning of how the love of preeminence corrodes ministry.

John's counsel is brief and bracing: do not imitate what is evil but what is good; anyone who does what is good is from God. This little letter opens a window onto the everyday life of the earliest churches — itinerant missionaries, open homes, and real friction too. The advance of the gospel has often hung on ordinary believers like Gaius, who quietly open their doors and walk faithfully in the truth.
