1 Kings: Introduction

First Kings opens in David's old age and traces Solomon's accession, the building of the temple, and the kingdom at its golden height — then the swift descent: Solomon's heart is turned by his foreign wives to other gods, and under his son the kingdom splits in two. From there the book alternates between the kings of Judah and Israel, measuring every ruler with a single standard — not military success or economic achievement, but whether he "did right" or "did evil" in the eyes of the LORD.

Solomon's story is a sobering study. He once humbly asked for a discerning heart to govern God's people, and at the temple dedication confessed that even the highest heavens cannot contain God. Yet the wisest of men had his heart stolen by degrees. In the north, king after king walks in the calf-worship of Jeroboam, until under Ahab and Jezebel the cult of Baal nearly swallows the nation. Into that darkness God sends Elijah, who confronts all Israel on Mount Carmel: "How long will you waver between two opinions?"

First Kings was written for a people who would later sit in exile, and it speaks just as directly to us: the rise and fall of a kingdom never turns on wealth or armies but on the object of its worship. Even Solomon's glorious temple would one day fall; only One greater than Solomon (Matthew 12:42) is the true dwelling of God with humanity. And Elijah's cry still cuts across three thousand years — between the LORD and our modern Baals, we cannot keep limping between two opinions.

AuthorAnonymous; Jewish tradition names Jeremiah, while most see a prophetic historian of the exile compiling court and prophetic records
