2 Samuel: Introduction
Second Samuel is the chronicle of David's forty-year reign. After Saul's death David rules Judah from Hebron for seven years, is then anointed king over all Israel, captures Jerusalem as his capital, and brings the ark into the City of David. Chapter 7 is a summit of the whole Old Testament: David wants to build God a house, but God promises instead to build David a house — a dynasty whose throne will be established forever. This Davidic covenant becomes the bedrock of all later messianic hope.
Yet the book refuses to airbrush its king. At the height of his power David takes another man's wife and arranges her husband's death; the prophet Nathan's "You are the man!" pierces every royal disguise. David repents sincerely and God forgives him, but the consequences cut through his household like a sword: Amnon violates Tamar, Absalom rebels, the nation convulses. Scripture's unflinching honesty about its hero teaches us to trust not in great men but in the God of grace.
David is forgiven yet still reaps what he sowed — a sobering word for readers today: grace is real, and so is sin's wreckage. But God's promise does not collapse with human failure. The throne "established forever" passes at last to David's greater Son, Jesus Christ (Luke 1:32-33). To read 2 Samuel is to look into the depths of the human heart and, above them, to see the covenant faithfulness of a God whose purposes are never defeated by our weakness.
