1 Samuel: Introduction

First Samuel records Israel's pivotal transition from the era of the judges to the monarchy. It opens not with a king but with a praying mother: Hannah pours out her grief before the LORD, and God gives her Samuel — Israel's last judge and the prophet who will anoint its first kings. When the people, weary of God's direct rule, demand a king "such as all the other nations have," God both warns them and grants their request. Saul steps onto the stage, and the curtain rises on the kingdom.

At the book's heart stand two contrasting kings. Saul is tall and initially humble, yet under pressure he repeatedly oversteps, disobeys, and dresses rebellion in religious language, until God rejects him — "to obey is better than sacrifice" is the verdict on his life. David is the man after God's own heart: the LORD looks not at outward appearance but at the heart. From his anointing among the sheep to his victory over Goliath, and through long years as a fugitive from Saul's spear, David learns in the wilderness to wait on God, refusing to lift his hand against the LORD's anointed.

First Samuel presses one question on every reader: what does God actually want? Not religious performance, but a heart that listens to His voice. David — anointed yet rejected, suffering yet faithful — foreshadows the greater Anointed One, Christ, who likewise passed through rejection and suffering before entering glory. If you find yourself hunted by your own "Saul," this book invites you to do as David did: leave vindication and your future in God's hands.

AuthorAnonymous; tradition links the book to records of Samuel, Nathan, and Gad (cf. 1 Chronicles 29:29), with the final compiler unknown
DateCovers roughly 1100–1010 BC; compiled after David's reign, with some dating the final form to the exile
ThemeGod raises up prophet and king to lead Israel: people look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart, and to obey is better than sacrifice

Key Verses

The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.

1 Samuel 16:7

Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
