Ruth: Introduction

Ruth is set "in the days when the judges ruled" — and yet within that dark age of everyone doing as they saw fit lies this small, luminous book. Famine drives a Bethlehem family to Moab; ten years later only the widow Naomi and her two Moabite daughters-in-law remain. At the most desolate turn of the road, Ruth the Moabitess makes her astonishing pledge: "Your people will be my people and your God my God." She chooses Israel's God, and chooses to share her grieving mother-in-law's fate to the very end.

In just four chapters the book glows with hesed — covenant kindness that goes beyond duty: Ruth's loyalty to Naomi, Boaz's protective generosity toward the widow and the foreigner, and behind it all, God's quiet care for people in bitter circumstances. As guardian-redeemer, Boaz buys back the family land and marries Ruth, grafting two hopeless widows back into the family of promise, until Naomi — who came back empty — holds a child in her arms again.

The closing genealogy unveils the book's deepest secret: Ruth's great-grandson is King David, and in Matthew's genealogy this Gentile woman's name stands in the line of Jesus Christ. Boaz the gracious redeemer foreshadows the Lord who gave Himself to redeem us. In an ordinary barley field and at a small-town gate, God was weaving His plan to bless all nations — and the ordinary days of today's reader rest in the same faithful hands.
