1 Peter

1 Peter: Introduction
First Peter is addressed to believers scattered across the provinces of Asia Minor — people Peter calls "exiles" and "foreigners." Storm clouds of persecution are gathering: these Christians are being slandered and mistreated for their faith. Peter's opening note is not survival but doxology: through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, God has given them new birth into a living hope and an inheritance kept in heaven that can never perish. Present trials, though grievous, refine faith the way fire refines gold.
The letter's controlling identity is that of the sojourner: believers are resident aliens whose true citizenship is elsewhere. Yet exile is not escape. Peter urges his readers to live such good lives among unbelievers that slander is silenced by visible goodness — in society, in the workplace, in the home. Why? Because they are "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation," called to declare the praises of the One who brought them out of darkness into His wonderful light.
When suffering comes, Peter points to the footsteps of Christ: insulted, He did not retaliate; suffering, He made no threats, but entrusted Himself to the Judge who judges justly. To suffer for doing good is, paradoxically, a blessing, because in God's economy suffering and glory belong together — as they did for Christ Himself. The letter closes with some of the gentlest commands in Scripture: cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you; and the God of all grace will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
Key Verses

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
