James

James: Introduction
James addresses "the twelve tribes scattered among the nations" — Jewish Christians dispersed abroad and struggling through trials. The author is traditionally identified as James the brother of the Lord, who did not believe in Jesus during His ministry but was transformed by an appearance of the risen Christ and became a pillar of the Jerusalem church. The letter has been called the Proverbs of the New Testament: blunt, vivid, and concrete — waves of the sea, a man at a mirror, bits in horses' mouths, a ship's rudder, a spark that sets a forest ablaze — each image landing squarely on the conscience.
Its central claim is that genuine faith always acts. "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says" (James 1:22); "faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead" (James 2:17). James does not contradict Paul's justification by faith; he targets a different danger — a "faith" that is mere verbal profession with an unchanged life. Real faith produces perseverance under trial, refuses favoritism between rich and poor, bridles the tongue, and pursues the wisdom that comes from heaven.
James's diagnosis of church life still stings: flattering the wealthy, tongues setting fires, boasting about tomorrow, withheld wages crying out against the rich. Yet his aim is always healing: "Come near to God and he will come near to you" (James 4:8); "The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective" (James 5:16). To read James is to look into an honest mirror — and then, instead of walking away and forgetting, to get up and do what it says.
