Hebrews: Introduction

Hebrews was written to believers from a Jewish background who were weary and wavering under pressure. They had once paid a real price for their faith, but now some were tempted to drift back to the old ways of Judaism — with its visible temple, priesthood, and sacrifices, it seemed a safer harbor. The author composes this "word of exhortation" (Hebrews 13:22) to argue a single thesis: Christ is supreme over everything. In the past God spoke through the prophets at many times and in various ways, "but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son" (Hebrews 1:1-2).

The book's signature word is "better." Christ is superior to angels, to Moses, and to the entire Aaronic priesthood; as a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek, he mediates a better covenant in a better sanctuary with a better sacrifice — offered once for all, perfecting forever those who are being made holy. Everything in the old covenant was a shadow; Christ is the substance. Woven between the arguments are five solemn warnings: do not drift away, do not harden your hearts, do not keep on sinning deliberately, do not refuse him who speaks — how shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation?

Yet this exalted high priest is not distant. He was tempted in every way, just as we are, and is able to empathize with our weaknesses — so we may approach the throne of grace with confidence (Hebrews 4:15-16). Chapter eleven parades the witnesses of faith; chapter twelve sounds the call: throw off every weight and run the race, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For every believer tempted to give up, Hebrews is a shot of courage straight to the heart.

AuthorThe author is unknown and the letter is anonymous; Paul, Apollos, Barnabas and others have been suggested through the centuries — as Origen said, "God only knows"
DateAround AD 60–69, before the destruction of the temple in AD 70, since the sacrifices are described in the present tense
ThemeChrist is supreme over angels, Moses, and the old priesthood as mediator of a better covenant — therefore hold fast and do not shrink back

Key Verses

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4:15-16

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
