1 Timothy: Introduction

First Timothy opens the trio known as the Pastoral Epistles. Paul had left his young coworker Timothy in Ephesus with a difficult assignment: to confront teachers who were drifting into myths, endless genealogies, and controversy, abandoning the goal of love that flows from a pure heart and a sincere faith (1 Timothy 1:3-5). This letter is both personal encouragement for Timothy and a handbook for the congregation — instructions on how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is "the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth" (1 Timothy 3:15).

The contents are intensely practical: prayer for all people including rulers, order in worship, the qualifications of overseers and deacons, the care of widows and elders, and the right attitude toward money. Strikingly, almost every qualification Paul lists for leaders concerns character rather than talent — above reproach, self-controlled, hospitable, managing one's own family well. A healthy church grows out of healthy lives; that conviction runs through the whole letter.

Paul's words to Timothy himself are among the warmest in the New Testament: do not let anyone look down on your youth, but set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity (1 Timothy 4:12); train yourself for godliness; fight the good fight of the faith and take hold of eternal life. Anyone who serves in the church today, or simply wants to understand what the church is meant to be, will find here guidance that is both rigorous and full of grace.
