2 Thessalonians: Introduction

Only months after the first letter, fresh trouble surfaced in Thessalonica. Persecution intensified; a rumor — passed off as a message or even a letter from Paul — claimed that the day of the Lord had already come, throwing the church into alarm; and some members had simply quit working, idly waiting for the end. Around AD 51–52, still in Corinth, Paul wrote this short, forceful sequel to comfort the suffering, correct the deceived, and confront the idle.

To the persecuted, Paul says their endurance is evidence of God's righteous judgment: when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels, he will repay the troublers and grant relief to his afflicted people. To the alarmed, he explains that the day will not come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is revealed — so stand firm and hold fast to the teachings you received. To the idle, he lays down the famous rule: "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat," urging them to settle down and earn the food they eat.

Brief as it is, this letter guards a balance believers still need: do not be unsettled by end-times rumors, and do not use "waiting for the Lord" as an excuse to abandon daily responsibility. Real hope plants your feet on the ground — "the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one." Never tire of doing good, for both judgment and comfort rest safely in the Lord's hands.
