1 Thessalonians: Introduction
First Thessalonians is likely one of Paul's earliest letters. On his second missionary journey he preached in Thessalonica — capital of Macedonia and a bustling port — for only a few weeks before Jewish opposition forced him out under cover of night (Acts 17). Anxious about whether these brand-new believers could stand under persecution, he sent Timothy back from Athens to check on them. Timothy returned to Paul in Corinth with good news: their faith and love were holding firm. Overflowing with relief, Paul wrote this letter around AD 50–51.
The first half is a tender retrospective: Paul says he was among them like a nursing mother caring for her children and like a father dealing with his own children — pastoral affection laid completely bare. The second half turns to exhortation: live holy lives, work with your hands, love one another more and more. Above all, answering their grief over believers who had died, Paul gives one of the New Testament's clearest teachings on Christ's return: the Lord himself will come down from heaven, the dead in Christ will rise first, and so we will be with the Lord forever.
"Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances" — this letter to a young church under fire still reads fresh today. It shows that a healthy church need not be old or well-resourced, but it will have endurance inspired by hope. And hope in the Lord's return is no escapist fantasy; it is strength to "encourage one another" and fuel for holy living.
Key Verses
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven… we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
