Colossians: Introduction

Colossians is another of Paul's prison letters (around AD 60–62). Colossae lay in the Lycus Valley east of Ephesus; its church was planted by Epaphras, and Paul himself had never visited. Epaphras traveled to see Paul in prison, bringing encouraging news but also a worry: a syncretistic "philosophy" was seeping into the church — festival observance, food taboos, the worship of angels, harsh treatment of the body — quietly implying that Christ alone was not enough, that fullness required secret knowledge and extra rules.

Paul's answer is not a point-by-point rebuttal but a higher lifting up of Christ: the Son is the image of the invisible God; all things were created through him and for him; in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in him you have been brought to fullness. Why then submit again to rules like "Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!"? These are only a shadow; the reality is found in Christ.

From this summit Paul descends into daily life: since you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above; put to death what belongs to the earthly nature; clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience; let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts; carry the faith into household and work. "Christ plus something" teachings still multiply today, and the answer of Colossians never changes: Christ is all, and is in all — and he is enough.
