Philippians: Introduction

Philippians is the letter of joy — written from a Roman prison around AD 61–62. Philippi was the first church Paul planted on European soil (Acts 16), and none was dearer to him: the Philippians had supported him again and again, and had now sent Epaphroditus with another gift. Paul writes to thank them, report on his circumstances, urge them toward unity, and warn against the circumcision party. In four short chapters, joy and rejoicing ring out more than a dozen times.

The summit of the letter is the Christ-hymn of chapter 2: though being in very nature God, he made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, and humbled himself in obedience to death — even death on a cross; therefore God exalted him to the highest place. Paul holds up this downward-then-upward arc as the pattern for the church's life together: have the same mindset as Christ Jesus, valuing others above yourselves. The letter is studded with lines believers carry for a lifetime: "to live is Christ and to die is gain"; "forgetting what is behind… I press on toward the goal"; "do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer."

Paul models a joy that circumstances cannot hold hostage: chains that advance the gospel, life or death that alike exalt Christ, contentment learned in plenty and in want — "I can do all this through him who gives me strength." For readers hemmed in today by anxiety and circumstance, Philippians is a gentle but potent remedy: Rejoice in the Lord always.
