Ephesians: Introduction
Ephesians is one of Paul's "prison letters," written around AD 60–62 during his imprisonment in Rome. Ephesus was the leading city of the province of Asia, where Paul had ministered for three years. Unlike most of his letters, this one addresses no particular crisis; it reads like a majestic sermon surveyed from a great height, and many scholars believe it circulated among the churches of Ephesus and the surrounding region. Its theme is God's eternal plan: to bring unity to all things in heaven and on earth under Christ.
The structure is wonderfully clear. Chapters 1–3 declare what God has done for us — chosen before the creation of the world, saved by grace through faith, Jew and Gentile made one new humanity in Christ, built together into a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit. Chapters 4–6 answer how we should respond — live a life worthy of the calling: keep the unity of the Spirit, put off the old self and put on the new, bring marriage and household under the gospel, and put on the full armor of God for the spiritual battle.
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith… not by works, so that no one can boast" — one of the most concentrated statements of the gospel ever written. To readers wrestling with identity anxiety and social fragmentation today, Ephesians offers a double answer: your identity was settled by God in Christ before time began and does not rest on performance; and your belonging is the church, the body of Christ, a new humanity that transcends race, class, and culture.
Key Verses
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.
As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. … Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.
