Galatians: Introduction

Galatians is a letter written to put out a fire. Soon after Paul planted churches in the region of Galatia, teachers from the "circumcision group" moved in, insisting that Gentile believers must add circumcision and the law of Moses to faith in Christ in order to be truly saved. The churches were quickly swayed. Paul was so alarmed that he skipped his customary thanksgiving altogether and opened with a rebuke: I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel.

His response unfolds in three movements. First, autobiography: his gospel came by direct revelation from Jesus Christ — he even opposed Peter to his face when Peter wavered. Second, Scripture: Abraham was justified by faith four hundred and thirty years before the law was given; the law served as a guardian to lead us to Christ. Third, life: true freedom is not license for the flesh but walking by the Spirit in faith, bearing the fruit of love, joy, and peace.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free." Galatians has been called the Magna Carta of Christian liberty; Luther cherished it so much he called it "my Katharina," after his wife. Legalism — earning God's acceptance by performance — still slips into churches and hearts in endless disguises. Galatians keeps pulling us back to the starting point: salvation is by grace through faith, and "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me."
