Deuteronomy: Introduction

Deuteronomy is Moses' farewell. Forty years of wilderness have come to an end; the new generation of Israel is camped on the plains of Moab with the promised land just across the Jordan — and Moses himself may not enter. The book contains his three addresses from the last month of his life: recalling the grace and lessons of the journey, restating the law of Sinai, and renewing the covenant for a people about to begin a new life. The name means "second law" — the law retold.

The soul of the book is the Shema: "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:4-5). Law here is not cold regulation but the response of love — because God first loved and chose you (Deuteronomy 7:7-8). Moses presses the point again and again: remember, do not forget; teach these words to your children, tie them on your hands, write them on your doorframes. Passing faith to the next generation is the book's deepest burden.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, all three Scriptures He quoted came from Deuteronomy, and He named wholehearted love for God as the greatest commandment. The book closes with Moses on Mount Nebo, gazing at the land he cannot enter, dying in Moab — while the choice he set out, "life and death, blessings and curses" (Deuteronomy 30:19), is left to every generation of readers: "Now choose life."
