Joshua: Introduction

Moses is dead, and the wilderness generation has passed away. Joshua opens with God Himself commissioning the new leader: "Be strong and courageous," for the LORD will be with him wherever he goes. The book tells how Israel, under Joshua, crosses the Jordan, conquers Canaan, and divides the land — the very land promised to Abraham more than four centuries earlier now finally lies under the nation's feet. This is not merely a war chronicle; it is a testimony that God keeps covenant.

The structure is simple: the first twelve chapters are about taking the land, the last twelve about distributing it. Jericho's walls fall to a faith-filled march, while Ai defeats Israel because of one man's hidden sin — victory never depends on military strength but on the people's standing with God. Even the seemingly tedious lists of borders and towns in the second half are really a ledger of faithfulness: not one word of all the good promises the LORD made to Israel failed.

In Hebrew, "Joshua" and "Jesus" are the same name — "the LORD saves." Joshua led the people into an earthly rest, but Jesus leads all who trust Him into a better and eternal rest (Hebrews 4:8-9). The covenant challenge at Shechem that closes the book still confronts every reader: "As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." Each generation must make its own choice.

AuthorAnonymous; traditionally attributed largely to Joshua himself (cf. Joshua 24:26), with the account of his death added by a later hand
DateCovers events around 1406–1380 BC; traditionally composed soon afterward, though some date the final form to the monarchy period
ThemeGod faithfully fulfills His promise by giving Canaan to Israel; the people must take the land by faith and keep the covenant in obedience
