Ecclesiastes: Introduction

Ecclesiastes is the most candid — and most modern — book in the Bible. The Teacher, who identifies himself as a king in Jerusalem, had everything a person could want: wisdom, wealth, palaces, pleasure, great achievements. Then he reports the result of the experiment with brutal honesty: "Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is meaningless." The Hebrew word pictures a breath, a wisp of vapor — impossible to grasp, impossible to keep. What does anyone gain from all their toil under the sun? That question drives the whole book.

The Teacher forces us to face life's most uncomfortable truths: the wise die just like fools; the fruit of your labor passes to someone who never worked for it; injustice goes unanswered; no one can fathom what God is doing. Yet this is not a book of despair. Again and again he urges us to receive our portion from God's hand — to eat and drink, to find satisfaction in our work, to enjoy life with the one we love — for these are God's gifts. Admitting that life is vapor teaches us to hold each present moment with humble, open hands.

The conclusion brings everything home: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind." Ecclesiastes demolishes every false hope under the sun precisely to drive us toward the God above the sun. The New Testament answers its sigh: creation was subjected to frustration in hope of liberation in Christ (Romans 8:20-21). For readers today who chase meaning through busyness and anxiety, Ecclesiastes is an honest old friend.

AuthorThe author calls himself "the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem"; traditionally Solomon in his later years, though some hold it was a later wisdom writer adopting Solomon's voice
DateTraditionally the 10th century BC, late in Solomon's life; others date it to the post-exilic period, around the 5th–3rd century BC
ThemeEverything under the sun is vapor; fear God, keep His commandments, and receive each day's gifts from His hand
