Proverbs: Introduction
Proverbs is the Bible's school of wisdom, bringing faith down into the texture of everyday life — words, money, marriage, friendship, work, parenting, and how we treat our neighbors. Its motto stands at the front door: "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge." True wisdom is not a bag of clever techniques but the art of living that begins with reverence for God. The first nine chapters are a father's urgent appeals to his son, while Lady Wisdom calls out in the streets, inviting everyone to abandon folly and take the path of life.
From chapter ten the book turns to its main body: hundreds of compact, two-line sayings, often setting the righteous and the wicked side by side. Each one is a polished gem meant to be turned over slowly. Proverbs are not mechanical guarantees but observations of how God's world ordinarily works — diligence tends toward plenty, laziness toward want; a gentle answer turns away wrath; pride goes before a fall. They train us to make God-fearing judgments in the gray areas where no explicit command applies.
The book closes with the portrait of the wife of noble character — wisdom embodied in a life that fears the LORD. The New Testament tells us that in Christ "are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3); Jesus is one greater than Solomon, God's wisdom in person. To read Proverbs today is to ask for more than street smarts: it is to let the fear of the LORD reshape our tongues, our wallets, and our relationships, so that we live wisely in Christ.
Key Verses
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
