Psalms: Introduction

Psalms is the longest book in the Bible — a collection of one hundred fifty prayers and songs gathered over roughly a thousand years. Often called Israel's hymnbook, it is better understood as a school of prayer for every generation of believers: thanksgiving for days of joy, laments for seasons of pain, confessions for the broken-hearted, songs of trust for the bewildered. The collection is arranged in five books, echoing the five books of Moses, each closing with a doxology, until the final five psalms erupt into one sustained hallelujah.

What makes the Psalms so precious is their honesty. Anger, tears, hard questions, and stubborn hope are all carried straight into God's presence without disguise. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" and "The LORD is my shepherd" come from the same book. The psalmists teach us that faith does not suppress emotion but turns every emotion toward the God who listens. Psalm 1 opens the book with "Blessed," locating the good life in day-and-night delight in God's word; Psalm 2 announces God's anointed King — together they lay the foundation for everything that follows.

The Psalms were also the prayer book of Jesus. On the cross He prayed Psalm 22; the hope of resurrection rings out from Psalm 16; Psalm 110 is the Old Testament passage most quoted in the New. The church has sung the Psalms in worship for two thousand years, because in David's weeping and praising we hear the voice of David's greater Son — and we find words for our own hearts. Whatever your circumstances today, somewhere in this book there is a psalm written for you.

AuthorDavid is the principal author (about 73 psalms), alongside Asaph, the sons of Korah, Solomon, Moses, Heman, Ethan, and others; some psalms are anonymous
DateComposed over roughly a millennium, from Moses (15th century BC) to the post-exilic period; final compilation around the 5th–3rd century BC
