Ezekiel: Introduction

Ezekiel was a priest carried off to Babylon. In his thirtieth year — the age he should have begun serving in the temple — he instead saw the glory of God by the Kebar River in a foreign land: a throne like a moving chariot, four living creatures, wheels within wheels going in every direction. The vision itself was the sermon: God's glory is not locked inside the Jerusalem temple. He is present with His exiled people on pagan soil, and He reigns over every nation.

The hinge of the book is chapter 33, when news reaches the exiles that Jerusalem has fallen. Before that moment, the prophet announces judgment through visions and startling sign-acts, watching the glory of God depart the temple step by step because of the people's sin. After it, the message turns wholly to hope: God Himself will search for His scattered sheep, cleanse His people, give them a new heart and a new spirit, breathe life into a valley of dry bones until they stand as a vast army, and make His dwelling with them forever.

"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you" (Ezekiel 36:26) — this is the gospel announced in advance. New birth is never self-improvement; it is the Spirit of God raising the dead. When Jesus told Nicodemus, "No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again," He was echoing Ezekiel's promise. And the good shepherd who seeks and saves the lost sheep (Ezekiel 34) has come to us in person in Christ.
