Genesis: Introduction
Genesis, meaning "origin," opens the entire Bible and answers humanity's most fundamental questions: Where did the world come from? What is a human being? Why do suffering and death exist? How did the relationship between God and humanity begin? The first eleven chapters paint a sweeping picture — creation, the fall, the flood, and the tower of Babel — describing the spiritual condition shared by the whole human race. From chapter twelve the camera narrows to one man, Abraham, whom God chooses and with whom He makes a covenant, promising that all peoples on earth will be blessed through his offspring.
The book revolves around promise: God pledges to Abraham land, descendants, and blessing for all nations. That promise is tested through four generations — barrenness, famine, family strife, a son sold into slavery — yet God's faithfulness never fails. Joseph's story brings the theme to its climax: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Genesis 50:20). Human evil is bent by God into an instrument of salvation.
For readers today, Genesis is not merely the beginning of history but the seed of the gospel. The promise that the woman's offspring will crush the serpent's head (Genesis 3:15) has been read by the church as Scripture's first announcement of salvation, and Abraham's faith — "Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness" (Genesis 15:6) — becomes the foundation of the New Testament doctrine of justification by faith. To read Genesis is to read the overture of God's plan of redemption.
