Exodus: Introduction

Exodus records the greatest act of deliverance in the Old Testament: God hears the cry of an enslaved people, strikes Egypt with ten plagues by the hand of Moses, and leads Israel through the Red Sea out of the house of bondage. The first half of the book is a breathtaking epic of redemption; the second half moves to the foot of Mount Sinai, where God makes a covenant with the newly freed people, gives the Ten Commandments, and directs the building of the tabernacle so that He Himself may dwell among them.

The exodus becomes the Bible's archetype of salvation: God's gracious rescue comes first, and the obedience of His people follows as grateful response. The Ten Commandments are not a ladder to earn salvation but the way of life for a people already saved — "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery" (Exodus 20:2) stands before every command. The blood of the Passover lamb, the crossing of the sea, manna in the wilderness, and water from the rock all point forward to Christ: "Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7).

Exodus also gives the fullest early revelation of God's name and character. At the burning bush God reveals Himself as "I AM WHO I AM" (Exodus 3:14); after the golden calf nearly shatters the covenant, He proclaims Himself "the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6). Judgment and mercy, holiness and presence meet in the cloud over the tabernacle — and the book closes with the glory of the LORD filling the tent.
