Leviticus: Introduction

Leviticus picks up where Exodus ends: the tabernacle stands, and the glory of God dwells in Israel's camp — but how can a holy God live among a sinful people? Leviticus is the answer. The book opens with the five offerings (burnt, grain, fellowship, sin, and guilt), establishes the priesthood, and lays down the laws of cleanness, all crystallized in one sentence: "Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy" (Leviticus 19:2).

Modern readers often find the book tedious, yet it establishes two ideas without which the gospel cannot be understood: sin must be atoned for by blood — "the life of a creature is in the blood… it is the blood that makes atonement" (Leviticus 17:11) — and sinners need a mediator, the high priest who enters the Most Holy Place once a year on the Day of Atonement. The letter to the Hebrews preaches from this very book: Christ is the greater High Priest who offered Himself as the better sacrifice, securing redemption once for all.

Holiness in Leviticus is never merely ritual; it reaches into everyday ethics — honest trade, care for the poor, no revenge, "love your neighbor as yourself" (Leviticus 19:18), which Jesus names the second greatest commandment. To read Leviticus is to see both the gravity of sin and the cost of atonement, and to hear the call for a redeemed people to be set apart for God in every corner of life.
