Hosea

Hosea: Introduction
Hosea's message was written with his own broken marriage. God commanded the prophet to marry Gomer; she abandoned him for her lovers and sank so low that she was put up for sale — and Hosea was sent to buy her back with silver and barley, and to love her again. This heartbreaking marriage is a mirror: the northern kingdom of Israel, chasing Baal and leaning on foreign powers, had been unfaithful to her husband, the LORD. And yet God's love refused to let go.
Accusation and tenderness alternate throughout the book. Israel's sins are named one by one — cursing, lying, bloodshed, altars everywhere but no knowledge of God: "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings" (Hosea 6:6). Yet again and again the words of judgment are interrupted by a father's heart: "When Israel was a child, I loved him"; "How can I give you up?... My heart is changed within me; all my compassion is aroused" (Hosea 11:1, 8).
The New Testament keeps returning to Hosea. Matthew sees "out of Egypt I called my son" fulfilled in Christ; Jesus twice answers the Pharisees with "I desire mercy, not sacrifice"; Paul quotes "I will say to those called 'Not my people,' 'You are my people'" to announce grace for the Gentiles. As Hosea paid the price to redeem Gomer, so Christ purchased an undeserving people at infinite cost — this is the heartbeat of the gospel.
