Joel: Introduction

Joel opens with an ecological catastrophe: wave after wave of locusts has stripped the land bare. The grain is destroyed, the new wine dried up, and even the offerings for God's house have ceased. The prophet summons elders, farmers, and priests to fast and mourn together — because this disaster is more than a disaster. It is a preview of "the day of the LORD," the great and dreadful day that no one can escape.

The hinge of the book is God's invitation: "Rend your heart and not your garments" (Joel 2:13). Repentance that stops at outward ritual means nothing; God wants the turning of the heart. And to those who genuinely return, His promises overflow: He will repay the years the locusts have eaten, send the autumn and spring rains, and — astonishingly — pour out His Spirit on all people, so that sons and daughters prophesy, old men dream dreams, and young men see visions.

On the day of Pentecost, Peter stood up and declared, "This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel" (Acts 2:16). The promise of the outpoured Spirit was fulfilled after Jesus' ascension, and the church was born; "everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved" became a cornerstone of gospel preaching (Romans 10:13). Read Joel and you will hear the trumpet of judgment — but you will also see the flood of grace, for even in calamity God is calling people home.
