Amos

Amos: Introduction
Amos was no professional prophet. He was a shepherd from Tekoa who also tended sycamore-fig trees (Amos 7:14), called by God from following the flock and sent north to Israel. It was the reign of Jeroboam II — borders secure, commerce booming, religious festivals packed. But beneath the prosperous surface the society was rotting: the poor were trampled, the needy sold for a pair of sandals, and justice was bought and sold.
The book's edge cuts straight at pious injustice. The people kept their feasts, brought their offerings, and filled the air with songs — yet God said, "I hate, I despise your religious festivals," because worship divorced from righteousness is detestable to Him. "But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!" (Amos 5:24) is the cry of the whole book. Amos also warns of the most terrible famine of all — not of bread or water, but of hearing the words of the LORD (Amos 8:11).
Even amid the thunder of judgment, the gospel echoes: "In that day I will restore David's fallen shelter" (Amos 9:11). At the Jerusalem council, James quoted this promise to show that the ingathering of the Gentiles was God's plan all along (Acts 15:16-17) — David's greater Son has risen, and all nations are being gathered into His kingdom. For readers today, Amos insists that worship and justice, faith and daily life, can never be torn apart.
