Obadiah

Obadiah: Introduction
Obadiah is the shortest book in the Old Testament — just twenty-one verses — and its message is aimed at Edom, the descendants of Esau. Perched in the rocky heights of Mount Seir, confident in their fortress crags and famed wise men, the Edomites said in their hearts, "Who can bring me down to the ground?" God's answer is unflinching: "Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down."
Edom's gravest sin was committed on "the day of your brother's misfortune." When Jerusalem fell, the Edomites stood aloof, gloated over the disaster, cut down the fugitives at the crossroads, and even joined in looting the city. Jacob and Esau were twin brothers, which makes the betrayal all the more bitter to God. "As you have done, it will be done to you" — the day of the LORD is near for all nations, and every deed will return upon the doer's head.
The book's final verses lift the eyes from Edom to eternity: "on Mount Zion will be deliverance," and "the kingdom will be the LORD's." Proud empires fall; God's kingdom stands forever — a hope fulfilled at last in the reign of Christ. For readers today, Obadiah is a mirror: beware the pride of heart that deceives, and beware standing by — or quietly gloating — on the day a brother stumbles.
