Isaiah: Introduction

Isaiah stands first among the prophets, vast in scope and majestic in message — often called "the Gospel according to the Old Testament." In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord seated on a high and exalted throne while the seraphim cried "Holy, holy, holy," and from that vision "the Holy One of Israel" became the heartbeat of his preaching. Serving through the reigns of four kings of Judah, under the looming shadow of Assyria, he pleaded with God's people to trust not in political alliances but in the holy God alone.

The book's structure has been compared to a Bible in miniature. Chapters 1–39 sound the note of judgment: Judah, the surrounding nations, and finally the whole earth must answer to God — yet a remnant of hope persists throughout. At chapter 40 the tone turns: "Comfort, comfort my people." The exiles will be redeemed and brought home, and the one true God will display His glory before all nations. Chapters 56–66 look further still, to new heavens and a new earth, with the nations streaming to the light of Zion.

Most stunning of all are the four Servant Songs, above all chapter 53: the suffering servant, despised and rejected, "pierced for our transgressions" and "crushed for our iniquities." The New Testament writers unanimously testify that these prophecies are fulfilled in Jesus Christ — from "the virgin will conceive and give birth to a son" to "by his wounds we are healed." To read Isaiah is to hear the gospel announced in full, seven hundred years before Bethlehem.

AuthorThe prophet Isaiah son of Amoz (Isaiah 1:1); some scholars assign chapters 40 onward to later disciples, while evangelical tradition has generally held to a single author
DateIsaiah ministered around 740–681 BC, spanning the reigns of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah
ThemeThe Holy One of Israel judges sin yet redeems through His suffering servant, and will finally renew all things and draw the nations to Zion

Key Verses

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Isaiah 53:5-6

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
