Jeremiah: Introduction
Jeremiah is remembered as the weeping prophet. Called as a young man in the thirteenth year of King Josiah, he served through Judah's final forty years, watching the nation he loved slide toward the destruction of Jerusalem and the burning of the temple. God commissioned this reluctant youth — "I do not know how to speak; I am too young" — as a prophet to the nations, entrusting him with a message of judgment for a generation determined not to listen. Because Jeremiah loved the very people he had to confront, no other prophetic book lays bare the inner anguish of its messenger so honestly.
The key to the whole book hangs in the opening chapter: Jeremiah is appointed "to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant" (Jeremiah 1:10). Judgment fills many pages, but its aim is healing. Seventy years of exile would not be the end of the story — God's plans for the exiles were plans of peace and not of harm, to give them a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). At the darkest hour of the siege, Jeremiah obeyed God and bought a field, a deed of purchase serving as a down payment on restoration.
The summit of the book is the promise of a new covenant (Jeremiah 31:31-34): God will write His law on human hearts and remember sins no more. Six centuries later, Jesus lifted the cup at the Last Supper and declared, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood" — announcing that Jeremiah's promise had come true in Him. Everyone today who receives forgiveness and a renewed heart belongs to the new-covenant people the weeping prophet glimpsed beyond the ruins.
