Micah: Introduction
Micah came from Moresheth, a small country town in Judah, and ministered in the same generation as Isaiah. While Isaiah moved in royal courts, Micah spoke for the people of the fields: the powerful plotted evil on their beds and rose at dawn to seize houses and farms; rulers judged for bribes, priests taught for pay, prophets told fortunes for silver. Micah's verdict was shocking: because of you, Zion will be plowed like a field.
The book weaves together three cycles of judgment and hope — after every thunderclap of rebuke, the light of restoration breaks through. Its most famous moment is the question that cuts to the heart of religion: what does the LORD require? Not thousands of rams or ten thousand rivers of olive oil, but "to act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8). The closing doxology echoes the meaning of Micah's own name — "Who is a God like you?" — the God who pardons sin and hurls our iniquities into the depths of the sea.
Micah 5:2 is among the clearest messianic prophecies in the Old Testament: the ruler of Israel will come from little Bethlehem, "whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." Centuries later, when the Magi asked where the Christ was to be born, the chief priests and scribes answered Herod with this very verse (Matthew 2:5-6). A tiny town, a lowly manger — God delights to accomplish His greatest salvation through what the world counts small.

But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.
