Nahum: Introduction
Nahum is Nineveh's death sentence. Roughly a century after Jonah's preaching, the city that once repented had returned to blood: Assyria was infamous for its cruelty — plundering nations, flaying captives — and in 722 BC it destroyed the northern kingdom of Israel. While Judah trembled in the shadow of Assyrian power, Nahum, whose name means "comfort," announced that the city of blood, full of lies and plunder, had reached its end.
The book opens with a majestic acrostic poem holding together two truths about God: "The LORD is slow to anger but great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished." His patience is not indulgence, and His wrath is not temper; precisely because He is just, brutality cannot run free forever. Yet to those who take refuge in Him, the same God is a fortress: "The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble" (Nahum 1:7). Judgment and goodness stand side by side in His character.
In 612 BC Nineveh fell exactly as foretold, buried under the sands so completely that its location was forgotten for centuries. For the oppressed of every generation, Nahum is deep comfort: God sees every act of violence, and the walls of the wicked will come down. The cry of "the feet of one who brings good news, who proclaims peace" (Nahum 1:15) echoes Isaiah 52:7 and finds its full answer in the gospel of Christ — the crushing powers have been judged, and good news of peace now runs to all nations.
