Revelation: Introduction

Revelation is a vision of victory written for churches under fire. Exiled to the island of Patmos "because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus," John was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day and saw the glorified Son of Man walking among seven golden lampstands — the risen Lord has never left His churches. The letters to the seven churches of Asia mix searching rebuke with tailor-made promise, and one summons runs through them all: to the one who is victorious, the inheritance belongs.

Chapters four and five are the hinge of the book. There is a throne in heaven — history has never slipped out of control. Yet no one is found worthy to open the sealed scroll, and John weeps, until the Lion of the tribe of Judah appears — as a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain. Heaven erupts in a new song: You are worthy, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. Every seal, trumpet, and bowl that follows, however terrifying, unfolds under the Lamb's sovereign hand.

Christians across the centuries have understood the millennium and the details of the visions in different ways, but the book's central message is held in common: Babylon the Great will fall; the Lamb and those who are with Him will triumph; God will dwell with His people, wipe every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more. Revelation is not a codebook for the curious but a transfusion of courage for weary saints — and in every hard age the church has prayed its closing prayer: "Come, Lord Jesus."

AuthorJohn (traditionally identified with the apostle John, who received the vision on Patmos, Revelation 1:9)
DateTraditionally around AD 95, late in Domitian's reign; others suggest shortly after Nero, around AD 68–69
ThemeThe slain Lamb has conquered: God will judge evil and make all things new, so the suffering church must stay faithful to the end

Key Verses

Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God.…He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.
