Romans: Introduction
Romans is the most systematic of all Paul's letters. Around AD 57, near the end of his third missionary journey, Paul wrote from Corinth while preparing to deliver a collection to Jerusalem and planning to push the gospel westward to Spain, with Rome as his base. Since he had never visited the Roman church, he set out his gospel in full — and this letter of introduction became the deepest theological treasury the church possesses.
The key is Romans 1:17: in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed, and the righteous will live by faith. Paul first demonstrates that everyone — Gentile and Jew alike — is under sin and falls short of God's glory; then he announces God's answer: through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus, sinners are justified freely, by grace, through faith. Chapters 6–8 unfold the new life that follows: united with Christ in death and resurrection, set free by the Spirit, secure in the verdict of "no condemnation," and held by the promise that God works in all things for good.
Chapters 9–11 wrestle with Israel's place in God's plan, displaying His faithfulness and sovereign mercy; from chapter 12 the letter turns to life: offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, and let love shape church, society, and the treatment of weaker believers. Augustine was converted through Romans, Luther rediscovered justification by faith in it, and Wesley's heart was "strangely warmed" by it. History keeps proving the point: few who read Romans seriously walk away unchanged.
Key Verses
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.
