Acts: Introduction

Acts is the second volume of Luke's work, telling how, in the roughly thirty years after Jesus' ascension, the gospel spread from Jerusalem to the heart of the Roman Empire. Jesus' opening promise is both the book's thesis and its travel map: "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8). It might better be called the Acts of the Holy Spirit — at every breakthrough, it is the Spirit who opens the way.

The first half centers on Peter: the Spirit descends at Pentecost, three thousand are baptized, and the church is born — devoting itself to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. Stephen is martyred and the believers scatter, yet the gospel only crosses more borders; Saul the persecutor is blinded by the risen Lord on the Damascus road, and the Gentile Cornelius and his household receive the Spirit. The second half follows Paul: three missionary journeys carry the gospel into Asia Minor and Europe, and the Jerusalem council confirms that Gentiles are saved by grace through faith in Jesus alone, without first becoming Jews.

Paul finally reaches Rome in chains, yet the book ends on an open note: he "proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ — with all boldness and without hindrance." The story of the church is unfinished — the same Spirit is still at work in the world today, and every reader is invited to join this continuing witness, to the ends of the earth.

AuthorEarly church tradition unanimously attributes the book to Luke the physician, as the sequel to his Gospel (cf. Acts 1:1)
DateAround AD 62, near the end of Paul's Roman imprisonment (some date it to the 70s–80s)
