John: Introduction

The Gospel of John stands apart from the other three. It opens not with a manger or a genealogy but in eternity: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." This Word, through whom all things were made, became flesh and made His dwelling among us. The author — the apostle John, "the disciple whom Jesus loved" — looks back late in life on all he saw and heard, and his purpose could not be plainer: "that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31).

John selects seven miracles as "signs" — water into wine, healings, the feeding of the five thousand, walking on the sea, the raising of Lazarus — each pointing to who Jesus is. Seven "I am" sayings — the bread of life, the light of the world, the good shepherd, the resurrection and the life, the way, the truth, and the life — are His own self-revelation. The word "believe" appears nearly a hundred times: Nicodemus comes by night asking about new birth, the Samaritan woman meets living water at the well, a man born blind receives his sight — one life after another encounters Jesus and is brought to the decision of faith.

Chapters 13–17 record the farewell in the upper room: Jesus washes His disciples' feet, gives the new command to love one another, promises the Spirit as Advocate, teaches abiding in Him as branches in the vine, and offers His high-priestly prayer. After the cross and the empty tomb, Thomas's confession — "My Lord and my God!" — places every reader before the same question: do you believe? "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

AuthorEarly church tradition unanimously attributes this Gospel to the apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved (cf. John 21:24)
