Luke: Introduction

Luke was a physician and a careful historian. He tells us himself that he "carefully investigated everything from the beginning" and wrote an orderly account for Theophilus, "so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught." The longest of the four Gospels, Luke begins with the births of John the Baptist and Jesus, preserving the tenderest details of the incarnation — Mary's song, the manger in Bethlehem, the shepherds in the fields.

Luke's Jesus is the Son of Man whose gaze rests on those everyone else overlooks: the poor, the sick, women, tax collectors, sinners, Samaritans, Gentiles. In the synagogue at Nazareth He announces His mission — good news to the poor, freedom for the oppressed, the year of the Lord's favor (Luke 4:18-19). The most beloved parables are found only here: the good Samaritan, the prodigal son, the Pharisee and the tax collector. This is also the Gospel of prayer, of the Holy Spirit, and of songs of joy.

From 9:51 Jesus "resolutely set out for Jerusalem," and the long travel narrative moves steadily toward the cross. The key verse sums up His heart: "For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost" (Luke 19:10). After the resurrection, the Lord walks the Emmaus road with two discouraged disciples, opening the Scriptures and breaking bread until their hearts burn within them. And the story is not over — Luke will write the sequel in the book of Acts.

AuthorEarly church tradition unanimously attributes this Gospel to Luke the physician, Paul's co-worker (cf. Colossians 4:14)
