Mark

Mark: Introduction
Mark is the shortest and fastest-moving of the four Gospels. There is no genealogy and no birth narrative; by the end of chapter one Jesus has already been baptized, tempted, called His disciples, and begun healing and casting out demons. The word "immediately" drives the story forward more than forty times, giving the book the feel of a documentary that never stops rolling. The early church consistently testified that Mark recorded the preaching of the apostle Peter, writing for believers in Rome who were facing persecution and needed to see a Lord who triumphs through suffering.
Mark's Jesus is the Servant in action. The book pivots at Peter's confession in chapter eight — "You are the Messiah." The first half answers the question "Who is Jesus?" as He teaches with authority, stills the storm, and raises the dead; the second half reveals what He came to do, as He three times predicts His death and resurrection and teaches His followers to deny themselves and take up the cross. The key verse stands at the center of this turn: "For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Mark 10:45).
The cross is the book's summit. As Jesus breathes His last, the temple curtain is torn in two, and a Roman centurion — a Gentile officer at the foot of the cross — speaks the confession announced in the very first verse: "Surely this man was the Son of God!" For everyone following Christ under pressure and hardship, Mark is a field manual: the way of service is the royal road, and at the end of the cross stands an empty tomb.
