Matthew: Introduction
Matthew stands at the doorway of the New Testament, deliberately bridging the two testaments. Its opening genealogy announces Jesus as "the son of David, the son of Abraham" — the long-promised King has come. The author, a despised tax collector called by Jesus to follow Him, writes chiefly for readers steeped in the Old Testament. He quotes it more than sixty times, returning again and again to the refrain "this took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet," testifying that Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah Israel had awaited.
The book is built around five great discourses — the Sermon on the Mount (ch. 5–7), the sending of the disciples (ch. 10), the kingdom parables (ch. 13), life in the church community (ch. 18), and the Olivet discourse on the end (ch. 24–25) — narrative and teaching alternating in a pattern reminiscent of the five books of Moses. "The kingdom of heaven" is the key phrase: this King reigns not by the sword but by mercy, forgiveness, and self-giving. He enters His capital on a donkey, wears a crown of thorns, and completes His royal mission on a cross.
The Gospel opens and closes with the same promise: He is named "Immanuel — God with us," and His final words are "surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." On a Galilean mountain the risen King issues the Great Commission, sending His followers to make disciples of all nations. To read Matthew is to hear the King's summons: the kingdom has drawn near — repent, follow, and carry this good news to the world.
Key Verses
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
