Malachi: Introduction
Malachi closes the Old Testament. Nearly a century after the return from exile, the temple stood rebuilt, but the fire of Haggai and Zechariah's generation had gone cold: priests offered blind and lame animals, men broke faith with the wives of their youth, tithes dried up, and people said openly, "It is futile to serve God." Yet God's opening word is unexpectedly tender: "I have loved you."
The book unfolds as six disputations with an unmistakable rhythm: God states a charge, the people retort "How have we…?", and God answers point by point. Their numb talking-back exposes hearts grown cold. Still, the promises stand wide open: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse… Test me in this," and see whether He will not pour out blessing beyond capacity; "I the LORD do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed" (Malachi 3:6).
The final pages look forward: "I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me" (Malachi 3:1), and Elijah will come before the great and dreadful day. Then Scripture falls silent for some four hundred years — until a voice cries in the wilderness, and Jesus declares that John the Baptist is the Elijah who was to come (Matthew 11:14). For those who revere God's name, "the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays." The Old Testament lays down its pen here, waiting for that sunrise — Christ Himself.
Key Verses
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.
But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.
