Zechariah: Introduction
Zechariah rose alongside Haggai to stir the returned exiles to rebuild the temple, but his horizon stretches far beyond one building. The book opens with eight night visions — a rider among the myrtle trees, a flying scroll, a measuring line — unfolding God's burning zeal for Jerusalem, His judgment on the nations, and the coming servant called "the Branch." To a discouraged governor Zerubbabel comes the word that still steadies God's workers: "Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit," says the LORD Almighty (Zechariah 4:6).
The book's second half (chapters 9–14) carries two "oracles" that look much further ahead: a king coming gentle and riding on a donkey; a shepherd rejected and priced at thirty pieces of silver; God's people looking on "the one they have pierced" and mourning as for an only child; a fountain opened to cleanse from sin; the LORD reigning as king over the whole earth. Mysterious in their own day, these pictures became the negatives from which the story of salvation would be developed.
Zechariah is among the prophets most quoted in the New Testament: Jesus entering Jerusalem on a donkey (Matthew 21:5), Judas's thirty silver coins (Matthew 27:9-10), "strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered" (Matthew 26:31), "they will look on the one they have pierced" (John 19:37). The footsteps of Passion Week trace almost line by line through Zechariah's prophecies. Read this book and you will find the cross already sketched in visions five hundred years before.
