Haggai: Introduction
The first wave of exiles returned from Babylon and laid the temple's foundation with joy — then opposition and the grind of daily life stalled the work for sixteen years. Everyone said, "The time has not yet come to rebuild the LORD's house," while settling comfortably into their own paneled homes. In 520 BC God raised up Haggai, who delivered four precisely dated messages within four months, each one piercing: "Give careful thought to your ways."
Haggai diagnosed the people's frustration: they planted much but harvested little, earned wages only to put them in purses with holes. The problem was not economics but priorities — God's house lay in ruins while everyone hurried after their own. Remarkably, the message worked: within twenty-four days governor Zerubbabel, high priest Joshua, and the whole remnant were back at work. And to discouraged builders God spoke with striking tenderness: "I am with you… Be strong, all you people of the land, and work."
When the new temple looked like nothing beside Solomon's, God made an astonishing promise: "The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house… and in this place I will grant peace" (Haggai 2:9). The desired of all nations would come — a hope that points finally to Christ, who walked into this very temple and is Himself the true dwelling of God with us. For readers today, Haggai presses one question of order: seek first the kingdom of God, and everything else finds its place.
