Zephaniah: Introduction

Zephaniah was a great-great-grandson of King Hezekiah — a prophet of royal blood — yet his message in the days of Josiah was anything but courtly. Two generations of idolatry under Manasseh and Amon had corrupted Judah to the core: people bowed on their rooftops to the starry host and swore by the LORD and by Molek in the same breath. Zephaniah announced that "the great day of the LORD is near" — a day of distress and anguish, of darkness and trumpet blast — and his preaching likely helped prepare the way for Josiah's reforms.

The judgment sweeps outward from Judah to the surrounding nations, then circles back to Jerusalem, "the city of oppressors, rebellious and defiled." Yet through the fire runs a narrow path: "Seek the LORD, all you humble of the land… Seek righteousness, seek humility" (Zephaniah 2:3). God promises to leave within His people "the meek and humble" who trust in the name of the LORD — the hope of the remnant threads through the whole book.

The book ends by turning lament into song, giving us one of the tenderest pictures in the Old Testament: "He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing" (Zephaniah 3:17). The Mighty Warrior who saves does not merely pardon His people — He sings over them. In Christ the picture becomes flesh: He seeks the lost Himself, and heaven rejoices over one sinner who repents. Beyond the day of wrath stands a God who quiets us with His love and exults over us with loud singing.
